Ground Rules

Now that I have returned to my first authoring love (the weblog), I am determined to be the best blogger that I possibly can.  In order to do this, I thought it necessary to research all the web’s top visited blogs for some ground rules to write by.  There is a reason they are visited and revisited, so I should take some of their advice.

Here is what I have discovered:

  1. People love to read lists.  It may seem odd, but the most popular blogs all seem to contain these lists of some sort.  Sometimes people list their favorite of something.  Other times, they list random advice in a simple to read format.  The important thing to note?  When things are broken into 1, 2, 3, it helps the reader to have an outline of your post in their head.  It makes for easier reading.
  2. The best blogs have pictures included.  This is a big problem for me.  I am a writer, after all.  So, pictures seem like a crutch to me.  But the facts don’t lie.  People are attracted to graphics over headlines…every time…
  3. Current events & upbeat topics do well.  As much as authors like to rant, people do not like to read it.  Controversy doesn’t do as well as you may think.  The best performing blogs are the ones that simply follow the trends of current events and comment…light-heartedly.  So…can I be funny?  Hmm…I can be sarcastic, but I don’t think that is going to cut it.  Gotta get my happy-go-lucky on.
  4. Inspiration should be inspirational.  While I love to teach from the Bible, I am going to stick to more generic inspirational posts on the main page.  I have a specific page, “Devotions”, for our Bible Study.  Hopefully, this will help make things more accessible to everyone.
  5. Post daily.  This is the difficult one.  The most popular blogs are the ones that have new posts every day (sometimes multiple per day).  In order to get things going again, I have to be ready to write…a lot.

Whew…hope I can find something to say.  Here we go again!
